HangulHover Data and Licenses
Last updated: 16 October 2026
HangulHover contains two databases. This page explains what they hold, how to get them and under which licenses they are distributed. It applies once the app is released and installed.
The two databases
- korean.sqlite is the dictionary.
- content.sqlite holds the example sentences, notes, idiom write-ups and groups of easily confused words.
Both are adaptations of material that is licensed under CC BY-SA. They are distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0, as section 4.2 of CC BY-SA 2.0 KR permits for adaptations of the dictionaries of the National Institute of the Korean Language (NIKL). The app's own code is not covered by this license.
How to get the files
The databases ship unencrypted inside the app. They are standard SQLite files and can be read with any SQLite tool.
In Finder:
- Open Applications.
- Right-click HangulHover and choose Show Package Contents.
- Open Contents, then Resources.
Or in Terminal:
cp /Applications/HangulHover.app/Contents/Resources/korean.sqlite /Applications/HangulHover.app/Contents/Resources/content.sqlite ~/Desktop/
The same folder holds Acknowledgements.txt, which has the
full license notices, and tatoeba_credits.tsv, which credits
each Tatoeba sentence.
