HangulHover is a macOS app for reading Korean. Rest the pointer on a word to see its romanization and English meaning, select an area to list the words in an image or video, and save words for spaced-repetition practice. Frequently asked questions
When will HangulHover be released?
HangulHover is coming soon to the Mac App Store. You can already try the interactive hover demo on the HangulHover page; the main page lists the current status.
How does the hover dictionary work?
Rest the pointer on Korean text in almost any app. A small panel shows the word, its romanization and its English meaning. Words with several meanings have a pager. Move the pointer away to dismiss the panel.
Which permission does the app need?
Only Screen Recording. HangulHover asks for it once, on its welcome screen, because both hover mode and area select read the screen. It never uses Accessibility or input monitoring. The captures are small (about 320 × 120 points around the pointer), are processed on your Mac with Apple's Vision framework, and are never stored or sent anywhere. Capture runs only while hover mode is on, or once for an area you select.
Does area select upload my screen?
No. When you drag a rectangle over Korean text in an image, PDF or video, recognition runs on your Mac using Apple's Vision framework. The captured region is never stored and never leaves your Mac. A shortcut copies the recognized text.
Does the app need an internet connection or an account?
No. The dictionary and text recognition are bundled and run locally. There is no account and no sign-in. The app makes no network requests in normal use. Links you click open in your browser.
What do the AI and MT tags mean?
Example sentences and notes that were written with AI carry an "AI" tag in the app. English that is a machine translation of an official Korean definition carries an "MT" tag. English for learner vocabulary comes from the Basic Korean Dictionary and Wiktionary. Many rare words show the Korean definition only.
Can I use the dictionary data?
Yes. The two databases in the app are distributed under CC BY-SA 4.0 and are stored unencrypted inside the app. The data page explains where to find them, which sources they use and under which licenses.
Does it sync with my iPhone?
Optionally, through Korean Cards, the companion app for iPhone and iPad, which is also coming soon. The sync is file-based: you move a file between devices with AirDrop or any other way you like. It carries your saved words with their review schedule in both directions. Nothing goes through a server.
Is HangulHover a subscription?
No. It is a single one-time purchase on the Mac App Store. No subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads, no tracking.
How do I request a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the HangulHover purchase, and choose "Request a refund."
What data does the app collect about me?
None. No analytics, no trackers and no account. Your saved words, review history, notes and settings stay on your Mac. See the privacy policy for details.
What are the system requirements?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon or Intel Macs. The app is sandboxed. It needs no Accessibility or input-monitoring permission. Screen Recording permission is requested once, on the welcome screen.
